WhatsApp Guest Chats: Chat Without a WhatsApp Account
WhatsApp has started rolling out a new feature called Guest Chats for both Android and iOS users. This feature allows people to chat with someone on WhatsApp even if they don’t have a WhatsApp account.
The feature works using a special invitation link that lets non-WhatsApp users join a conversation directly from their browser.
How WhatsApp Guest Chat Works
The new WhatsApp guest chat feature allows a registered user to start a conversation with someone who is not using WhatsApp. To do this, the user simply sends an Invite a Friend link.
This invitation link can be shared through:
- SMS
- Another messaging app
Once the recipient receives the link, they can open it on either a mobile device or a desktop browser. The link opens a chat window through WhatsApp Web, where the user can either download WhatsApp or continue the conversation as a guest.
End-to-End Encryption for Guest Chats
Just like regular WhatsApp conversations, guest chats are protected by end-to-end encryption. When a guest joins the chat, WhatsApp Web generates a unique identifier which creates the encryption key.
This ensures that only the people involved in the chat can read the messages. Even WhatsApp itself cannot access the content of the messages.
Guest Chat Invitation Expiry
To improve security, the invitation link for guest chats is only valid for 10 days. After that period, the link expires automatically. This helps reduce the chances of misuse if the link falls into the wrong hands.
How WhatsApp Shows Guest Users
WhatsApp clearly labels guest users in the conversation. When a guest joins the chat, the word “Guest” appears in the chat interface and the top bar of the app.
This makes it easy for the WhatsApp account holder to identify that the person replying is not using a registered WhatsApp account.
Limitations of WhatsApp Guest Chats
Guest chats are designed for temporary messaging, so they come with several limitations. Some WhatsApp features are not available for guest users.
Guest chats do NOT support:
- Group chats
- Voice messages
- Stickers
- Photos and videos
- Documents and GIFs
- Voice or video calls
This means guest chats are mainly intended for simple text conversations.
Why WhatsApp Introduced Guest Chats
The goal behind this feature is to make communication easier with people who do not yet use WhatsApp. At the same time, WhatsApp may hope that guest users enjoy the experience and eventually decide to create a full account.
However, creating a WhatsApp account is not required to participate in guest chats.
Final Thoughts
The WhatsApp guest chat feature could make it easier to communicate with new contacts, clients, or people who do not want to install the app.
Although it has limited functionality, it provides a simple and secure way to send temporary messages.
